What's In A Name?
So, why “The Orpheum”? In many ways, the name immediately matched our vision. It’s classical allure embodies the artistic spirit and historical depth of Malta, an island steeped in rich heritage. It reflects the island’s vibrant tapestry of art, culture, music and entertainment. Yet, the title also deeply resonates with personal experience which kickstarted this project.
On a fine mid-Summer evening, Emily and I were out on a pleasant evening stroll along the Gzira-Sliema promenade. The gentle sea breeze, the breathtaking views of Valletta are still a fresh memory. Catching a glimpse of the Gzira parish church in the distance, we took a detour to admire its architectural beauty and light show for the upcoming festa. Caught in the moment, we continued on our detour, exploring the curious side streets. It was at this point that we stumbled on the Oprheum Theatre, an art nouveau masterpiece a stone’s throw away from the seafront. This hidden gem, with its grandeur and potential, sparked our imagination of what could be. In the middle of this experience, it was a few doors down that we discovered just the right property to set the wheels in motion. And just like that, the Orpheum project was born.
Did You Know?
Designed in 1932 by renowned architect Harold J. Borg, this historic theatre once served as a vibrant cultural hub, hosting live performances and film screenings. Although no longer in regular use, its façade remains a captivating landmark, reflecting Malta’s rich artistic heritage. Built as a large single screen cinema, the building is comprised of flat floored stalls, a large single balcony, paneled celings and a painted shield of Orpheus by renowned artist Rafael Bonnici Cali.
The building also admits a distinguished history. It hosted operatic events, various foreign celebrities including Italian singers such as Claudio Villa and Domenico Modugno, as well as hosting a concert by the world famous band Black Sabbath in the 90s. Today, the theatre serves as a multi-purpose site, serving the community whilst also finding roots in the underground music scene.
It is our dream to see this majestic venue restored back to it’s glorious self.
